Today’s letter signals a return to my days as a metal chick. Yes. It’s probably no stretch to imagine it, but I was a metal head in high school. I won’t torment you with the photos, but there are more than a few of them to prove my allegiance to hair bands and spandex.
At the same time, I was a classically trained singer, and I eventually became a vocal performance major in college. Therefore, I was obsessed with lead singers who had awesome voices.
Geoff Tate of Queensryche was one of my favorites. His pipes moved the heavens. He had that wonderful mix of operatically trained vocals and metal vibe–the scream factor–somewhat like Rob Halford of Judas Priest (but I preferred Geoff, sorry Rob fans). I was ready to run off with him at a moment’s notice. Alas, he never asked.
Queensryche’s album Operation Mindcrime was one of the most brilliantly orchestrated concept albums I’d ever heard (and to this day it remains one of my favorites).
Here is “Eyes of a Stranger”–probably one of the biggest hits off the album in 1988. The video was pretty cool too. Check it out if you have the chance.
What’s one of your favorite bands of all time?
I’d love to see your “metal head” pics from high school! Just sayin’!

I can probably help you out with that…

Yes! I totally agree about Queensryche. Operation Mindcrime was a brilliant concept album. (And I prefer them over Judas Priest too.) As for my all time favorite band – I’m still a Metallica girl!

I know it! Every time I see James, I think of you! AND I listen to a station here that plays Metallica daily (usually the later stuff, though).

London,
Thank-you for the return visit yesterday and to learn that you’re a Tennessee girl, too. Isn’t the world a small place? I never got into metal or heavy mewsic but sometimes these band produced a song or two that I liked. I have a lot of bands that I love but my most memorial are from the 70s like Bread, Chicago, and ELO to name only a few. I’m not at all familiar with Queensryche but your song share has a nice sound, so I appreciate the introduction. Have a quintessential day!

I love 70s bands too. I have a really eclectic taste in music, so metal is just one of many types of music I like.

Yeah, Robert Plant never asked me to run off with him, either…
Clearly, fame distorts something in their heads…
